A Gentle Introduction to Draghunting

This is the first "Gentle Introduction to Drag Hunting" event being held on Blue Bird before the beginning of the 2025/26 season. This is a special mounted hound exercise designed to introduce riders and their horses, who have not hunted before, to the fun of hunting. Come and introduce your new or young horse to the hounds and to being part of a field of horses. This will be a perfect opportunity to introduce you and/or your horse to the great sport of drag-hunting. Booking is essential as we can only accommodate a limited amount of riders

We will assemble on the the farm at 8.30am for 8.45am. Experienced members of the Rand Hunt will be there to meet you. Our field master will collect your payment receipt and talk you through guidelines for safe riding in a group of horses. 

The hunt servants will then set off with the hounds and the field master will take the field at a trot on a route around Blue Bird, planned to include small inviting non-compulsory jumps. This will give everyone the opportunity to experience moving and jumping in a group at a slow and controlled pace. The field master and riders will occasionally meet up with the hounds and hunt servants in order to give your horse the opportunity to watch hounds moving, close by.

When hounds return home, if you are "up to it", you will have the opportunity to jump some lines of non-compulsory hunt jumps (between 600 and 800mm high) as a group, behind the field master, as you would do when out draghunting as a rider in the field.

If you have always wanted to come draghunting but have been too nervous to try it or if you have a young horse that needs to be introduced to the concept of moving with a group of horses, this is perfect for you.

From Hartebeestpoort Dam, Broederstroom
Travel west past Pecanwood and Le Godimo to the T Junction at Van Gaalen's. (zero your odometer in order to measure 13.6 km from this point)
Turn left onto the R560 to Magaliesburg
Travel through Scheerpoort and continue on this road towards Krugersdorp.
13.6 kms from the Van Gaalen T Junction, turn right  (sign to Inanda Blue Bird and Rand Hunt) 
This road is called the T4
Travel for 2.5km on this dirt road to a T Junction 
Turn right to Skeerpoort (sign to Inanda Blue Bird and Rand Hunt) 
The Blue Bird farm entrance is 500m from T junction (HF4)

Alternative route on the Krugersdorp Highway N14 (similar distance from Fourways as above)
Travel west towards Krugersdorp on the N14
At the end of the highway at the new CradleStone Centre on left and a Sasol garage in front of you on the  right, turn right to Ventersburg (also the N14 incidentally)
After 10km you reach a T Junction
Turn right to Ventersdorp, Hekpoort and Maropeng onto the R563
Continue on this road for 22km to the T Junction at the end
Turn right to Hartebeespoort and Hekpoort onto the R560
Travel on the R560 for 7.2km and turn left (sign to Inanda Blue Bird and Rand Hunt) 
This road is called the T4
Travel for 2.5km on this dirt road to a T Junction
Turn right to Skeerpoort (sign to Inanda Blue Bird and Rand Hunt) 
The Blue Bird farm entrance is 500m from T junction (HF4)
